Frilford Heath Golf Club, located in Oxfordshire, is one of England’s most respected golf venues, boasting 54 holes spread across three championship courses – the Red, Green, and Blue. Known for its rich history, pristine playing surfaces, and challenging layouts, the club attracts both members and visiting golfers seeking a high-quality golfing experience.

In 2020, Ocmis was issued tender documentation by irrigation consultants Irritech Limited for the complete irrigation system upgrade across all 54 holes at Frilford Heath Golf Club. The project was restructured into a three-phase installation, with each course treated as its own standalone project. Following a competitive tender process, Ocmis was awarded the contract in 2021 to deliver Phase One – a complete overhaul of the irrigation system on the Blue Course.

Toro irrigation equipment was selected for the upgrade, forming part of a long-term plan to equip all 54 holes with cutting-edge Toro Lynx technology. The Phase One scope of works included new irrigation for greens, approaches, surrounds, tees, and fairways. A new 230m³/hr pumping station was installed, drawing water from the club’s storage reservoir, alongside the implementation of a Toro Lynx Control System that will eventually manage all courses through radio communication.

During the installation, Ocmis encountered unexpectedly hard ground whilst laying the mainline pipework. Thanks to the company’s extensive fleet of specialist machinery, work continued without disruption, ensuring the programme remained on schedule. This phase of the project also saw Ocmis mole plough 225mm HPPE pipework – the largest diameter the company had ever installed using this method. This milestone was achieved through Ocmis’s ongoing commitment to invest in best-in-class equipment, continually enhancing capabilities to deliver more efficient and higher-quality installations.

The installation commenced in winter 2021 and was completed in spring 2022 and throughout the project, Ocmis maintained close and transparent communication with both the club and Irritech Limited, ensuring that all works met the client’s expectations – a hallmark of the company’s ethos. The Phase One works involved the installation of approximately 25km of pipework and around 900 new Toro sprinklers, with tee-off points incorporated for future connections in later phases.

A new pump set comprising six Grundfos pumps was installed within a storage room at the maintenance facility. All stainless-steel manifolds and control panels were designed and manufactured at Ocmis’s workshop in Somerset by the company’s experienced in-house team, ensuring quality control at every stage.

The result was a resounding success – the client and members were delighted with the transformation of the Blue Course, praising both the technical quality of the system and the professionalism of the installation. This project stands as a source of pride for Ocmis and sets the stage for the forthcoming phases. The coordination between Ocmis, Frilford Heath Golf Club, and Irritech Limited proved critical in delivering a high-quality irrigation system that represents a major investment in the club’s future and a commitment to maintaining first-class playing conditions for its members.

Frilford Heath Golf Club, located in the heart of Oxfordshire boasts 54 holes across three exceptional courses – the Red, Blue and Green. In recent years, the club has embarked on a major three-phase irrigation upgrade to secure the long-term quality and playability of its courses. The first phase, completed in 2022, saw the Blue Course benefit from a modernised Toro Lynx irrigation system. In 2024, the second phase of the project was undertaken – the installation of the Red Course. This phase of works paves the way for the final phase on the Green Course, ensuring all three courses will be supported by a robust and integrated Toro Lynx system.

Following the successful completion of the Blue Course in 2022, Ocmis were once again entrusted with the works for the Red Course. The strong working relationship established with the club during Phase One, combined with the quality and efficiency of the completed works, positioned Ocmis as the natural choice to continue the project. Prior to commencement, Ocmis engaged in detailed discussions with the club to review the scope of works and confirm all parties were happy with the proposed installation which was scheduled to take place in the winter of 2024.

The installation provided new irrigation to the greens, approaches, surrounds, tees and fairways, incorporating just under 30km of irrigation pipework. The new pipework was connected to the existing pipework infrastructure already installed in Phase One, extending and integrating into a more extensive and complex pipe network across the site. To future-proof the system, additional cable zones were installed alongside sections of the new pipework to facilitate the upcoming Phase Three installation on the Green Course, ensuring seamless connection and control through the Toro Lynx system.

Ocmis’s installation team who were already familiar with the site layout and operational requirements, carefully reconfigured the Toro Lynx control system to incorporate the additional Red Course into the existing hydraulic flow tree. Adjustments were also made to the parameters of the existing 230m³/hr pumping station, originally installed in Phase One, to optimise performance for the expanded network.

During the installation, particular care was taken when installing a section of 180mm HPPE pipework in the vicinity of the clubhouse. Using the moleploughing method, Ocmis ensured minimum disturbance to the turf, which like across the site left no noticeable trace once the pipework was installed, preserving the immaculate presentation expected at Frilford Heath Golf Club.

Throughout the project, Ocmis worked closely with Irritech Limited, the designers of the irrigation system for the entire 54-hole site. This ensured that each phase especially this one was fully aligned with the overall hydraulic design, maintaining performance consistency and preparing the system for its final integration once Phase Three takes place. The use of the Toro Lynx technology throughout the first two phases ensures precise, efficient and reliable irrigation management, tailored to the needs of the club’s championship-standard courses.

The installation of the new irrigation system on the Red Course was completed successfully, receiving positive feedback from both the club’s management and members alike. The project stands as a testament to Ocmis’s expertise in delivering complex, phased irrigation solutions while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship and attention to detail.

The installation of the new system at Frilford Heath Golf Club marks another proud achievement for Ocmis as well. Working in partnership with the club, the company is delivering infrastructure that will serve the courses for decades to come, leaving a lasting contribution to one of the UK’s finest golfing venues.

Ocmis installed the irrigation systems to the Olympic North Park and Eton Manor as part of the major construction works in the run up to the games. The project was so large and complex that several landscape contractors were working on the site simultaneously to ensure the deadline was met. Ocmis were given the responsibility of installing the irrigation system across all three of the North Park work zones, working with different contractors in each area and ensuring the soft landscape had water available as soon as it was planted.

The North Park is divided by the River Lea running north to south; the A12 running east to west separates the Eton Manor site from the main park. The site wide non-potable water main is operated by Thames Water and supplies high quality treated water from the nearby sewage treatment plant. This system supplies water for irrigation, toilet flushing and other non-potable applications in the surrounding buildings.

Ocmis fitted separate automatic pump stations to each of the three areas to provide enough flow and pressure for the irrigation system. The pumps automatically regulate the flow into the irrigation main depending on demand.

29,000 metres of underground pipe work was installed as the construction works progressed. The pipe work was laid as the complex landforms were constructed, with the control cables installed alongside the pipe. The works were carefully sequenced with the installation of other services, construction haul roads, bridge, road, path installations and many other factors, all to a critical programme.

The irrigation controllers allow the maintenance teams to easily adjust the amounts and frequency of irrigation. The systems were programmed with run time data based on the application rates for each area; adjustment of this ensures quick and accurate scheduling to minimise water use. The shrubs, trees, lawns and meadows all have different water requirements depending on the aspect and location.

Ocmis installed the systems with our own directly employed installation teams to ensure quality and continuity throughout the park. With 1100 sprinklers, 52,000 metres of drip pipe and 1200 trees to irrigate, benchmarking, good working practices, communication and work scheduling were key to delivering the schemes on time.

Ocmis installed the irrigation system for the Athletes Village public realm during the construction of the village. It was a complex series of contracts working with a number of separate contractors to install one unified irrigation system.

The irrigation system was spread through the whole site, and Ocmis worked with seven construction and landscape contractors to deliver eleven separate contracts across the public realm. The infrastructure for the system crossed over all the work areas, with mainline pipe and cable being laid along the streets and terminated in the soft landscape areas. This phase of the installation was part of a site wide Earthworks package, installed as the levels were finalised and before each area was handed over to the finishing contractor. Ocmis then connected to the mainline as part of the follow-on contracts and continued the system into the finished landscape as part of the soft landscape works.

Water for the irrigation system was harvested from site run off and treated through the ponds, reed beds and an aeration system in the wetlands. Once treated, the water is used for irrigation, toilet flushing and to circulate through the feature ponds in the village landscape. As well as the irrigation, Ocmis also installed the Wetlands aeration system, the pond re-circulation system and the grey water supply to Chobham Academy as part of the works.

The shrubs and trees are irrigated using pressure compensated drip to ensure uniform application rates and avoid water loss. Lawn areas are irrigated with 310 sprinklers and spray heads, there is 20,000 metres of drip pipe and the whole system is controlled through 141 solenoid valves across the site.

The site wide system is supplied through pumps and filters in the wetlands plant room and a central irrigation control system. The irrigation in each of the landscaped areas is connected to the controls through a wire path laid with the mainline pipe. The distribution of water around the village is controlled by the maintenance team from the plant room, where they can adjust application rates to suit the different areas.

The technical challenges together with the logistics and tight programme meant this was a demanding project. Good site communication and experienced Ocmis installation staff ensured the system was installed on time and on budget.
